La Sandia, located in Denver’s bustling Northfield Boulevard, garners mixed reviews that highlight its culinary strengths and a few notable shortcomings. Customers rave about the limited yet impressive menu, often praising unique dishes like the fried sweet plantains and the lava taco bowl. Patrons have a love affair with the carne asada and the rich mole, making these dishes local favorites. The service has received commendations, with staff being described as attentive and friendly, especially when returning forgotten items like phones!
However, some diners have expressed dissatisfaction with the restaurant's early closing time and the abrupt ambiance changes when lights dimmed near closing. This has raised eyebrows, as it disrupts the otherwise enjoyable dining experience, particularly for those savoring dessert like churros or tres leches.
Despite a lack of extensive vegetarian options, several guests enjoyed dishes like veggie enchiladas and appreciated the happy hour deals. With a warm ambiance, bold drink options, and what some consider fantastic flavors, La Sandia is a promising dining spot worth a visit—just perhaps during daylight hours to fully enjoy the culinary experience!

Review highlights
Based on 1,006 reviewsLa Sandia consistently receives praise for its high-quality, flavorful food presented through a focused, limited menu that many patrons find thoughtfully curated. Customers appreciate unique offerings such as fried sweet plantains and creative drink options like specialty margaritas. The restaurant’s atmosphere is noted for being welcoming and comfortable, though some visitors have mentioned cooler indoor temperatures during their visits. Service stands out as a strong point, with attentive and friendly staff who create a relaxed dining experience without rushing guests. While the menu includes some vegetarian options, there are occasional comments about limited variety, particularly concerning seafood availability. Overall, La Sandia is recognized for its combination of well-executed dishes, engaging beverages, and dependable service, making it a favored local spot for casual dining and happy hour gatherings.
Really good food. Limited menu but I appreciate a small menu done very well over a large, mediocre menu. A favorite at the table were the fried sweet plantains. Never seen these served at a Mexican restaurant and they were so delicious (coming from a Caribbean household where we eat these regularly)! Our sever was also great...I accidentally left my phone and he ran to our car to get it back to me. I loved the carne asada and my husband got the mole, which was also delicious. Others at the table ordered the chimichanga and the fajitas. Plus two kids meals which were great. 5 stars on the food and dessert (churros and tres leches). I will say there was one glaring issue: they have an early close time of 9pm and when it was close to 9, the lights over our dining area literally went out and we couldn’t see our food. The man eating at the table near ours literally took his phone out to be able to see his food. If there are paying customers (we ordered several entrees plus dessert), let them finish their meal. This felt tasteless and rude...no staff seemed to know what was going on and everyone had a different excuse; it was pretty bizarre and felt like they were just trying to kick people out. If the lights are on an automatic timer, it needs to be fixed. Overall recommend aside from that. We will be back...maybe during the day to avoid that!!!
Wonderful place to eat. Great food but not many veggie options. There was seafood but they were out of fish when we got there, so we were very limited. The food was great and so was the service. Some reason it was really cold in the restaurant and we asked to move, we were still really cold and I noticed many tables still had their winter jackets on. Good location and nice ambiance
The lava Taco Bowl was legit! Queso was a bit heavy but delicious. Staff was well trained and on top of it. Quick service and unique drinks. I had a watermelon margarita and it was delicious.
Great happy hour deals on food and drinks! The spicy orange margarita and the cucumber watermelon margarita were fantastic. Joseph gave great service! We’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu.
Super great place! They had vegetarian options which I LOVED! I had the veggie enchiladas and they were so good! Our waiter was also super sweet and gave us as much time as we needed. This was the first place I ever went to where I didn't feel rushed to eat.
After a 13hr drive from STL, this place hit the spot. Our best friends treated us here and the staff let us customize entrees to be vegetarian. They had a few options but I really wanted a burrito. The aesthetic was hip and the drinks were fair priced. Highly recommended.
Very delicious. I was here and I'm from out of town so eating out at places I've never been is hard for me. I chose chicken tacos and my cup worker had veggie tacos. We also got a molcajete cheese dip to share. Delicious!
This is my favorite spot to stop by for my Lunch hour! The service is fast and super friendly. The happy hour special is unbeatable for top quality Mexican cuisine. Imagine, you can eat a plate of tacos and have 2 beers for under 20 in Denver! Deals are not what makes this place special however, it is the atmosphere. The interior is beautiful, warm, and very clean. I usually sit at the bar, but there is plenty of seating throughout the restaurant to accommodate groups. I suggest that if you come to Northfield to shop, stop at La Sandia for a drink and bite. Lupita makes the best margarita in town!
